HILLCREST
Meadville’s Hillside Community of over 200 single-family homes.
Historic Housing
Hillcrest was built in 1936 as Meadville’s first large-scale housing development, created to solve a severe housing shortage during the Great Depression. Despite the national economic crisis, Meadville’s booming industries like Talon Zipper and American Viscose needed homes for their growing workforce.
The Meadville Chamber of Commerce led the effort, securing federal backing through the newly formed FHA and rallying local businesses and residents to raise funds.
The development became a national model, praised for its innovative approach and community support.
Hillcrest’s design featured safe cul-de-sac streets and varied home styles. Today, Hillcrest remains a vibrant neighborhood, reflecting Meadville’s resilience and forward-thinking spirit.
